How to pack your belongings when moving house

One of the most important things to get right when moving is to pack your belongings correctly so they arrive in one piece and you can easily find them at the other end of your trip. Here are some tips on how to pack your items safely and securely.

Pack one room at a time

You will need to pack your belongings systematically, and the best way to do this is to pack one room at a time. This makes it much easier to unpack at the other end — each box will belong in a single room, and you can make the most essential rooms inhabitable before moving on to the less important parts of the house. It's also worth starting your packing with the rooms you use the least, as this means you can get started well in advance.

Keep similar items together

This makes it much easier to organise your possessions. Books and CDs will pack more neatly if they are kept together, and other items such as breakables or clothes will need to be packed in similar ways. You don't want them in contact with other items that might cause damage. This also makes it much easier to label the boxes, which is the key to simple unpacking in your new home.

Pack breakables securely

You may quickly get tired of wrapping individual glasses and crockery — this is a good reason for starting well in advance — but this really is the best way to prevent breakage. Make sure there is a layer of cushioning at the bottom of the box, and wrap each piece in newspaper or bubble wrap, depending on fragile it is.

Keep heavier items at the bottom

This doesn't just apply to individual boxes, but also to how you stack them. Let gravity work with you rather than against you — put the lighter objects above the heavier ones, as they are much less likely to crush or damage what's below them.

Use a professional service

The simplest way to avoid damage to your items is to let your removals company handle the packing. You will then know your treasured belongings are in the hands of trained and experienced professionals and will be fully insured.

If you have any queries about how to pack for a move, ask your house removals service. They are ideally suited to answer all your questions.
